Issue 5: 8 March 2008

Dear Subscriber

The programme for FotoFreo 2008: The City of Fremantle Festival of Photography has now been finalised. However, like most events of this kind, there will inevitably be some small (hopefully!) changes and I would urge you to check regularly for updates to the programme and to the website.

At last count there were 29 core exhibitions, including 5 group shows, projections of the work of 40 photographers and another 54 exhibitions in the FotoFreo Perth and FotoFreo Fringe. All up, 83 exhibitions involving more than 250 photographers. These exhibitions, together with the floor talks by participating photographers and the conference, seminar, informal lectures and presentations by 30 speakers, have created an event that is very much about a gathering of like minded people to look at and discuss what is happening in the world of photography. We hope you will be joining us.

We have now recruited a small cohort of volunteers and the first induction night (there will be 2) will be held next Thursday the 13th of March and followed by another induction evening the following Thursday, the 20th of March. We have established a separate newsletter for our volunteers to keep them up to date with developments and programme event scheduling; the first of these will be circulated in the next few days. However, we are still keen to recruit more volunteers and if you are interested please go to our volunteer's page on the FotoFreo website.

We will shortly be establishing on the FotoFreo website an ‘event registration page’ for visitors to FotoFreo 2008. The purpose of this will be to ensure that those who register will be able to attend the functions they select. Our concern is that a number of the venues, and even some of the events, can only accommodate a limited number of people. Events that we would particularly urge you to register for will include the official opening (limited to 1000), the opening at the Maritime Museum on Sunday the 6th April (300) and the opening at the Moores Building on Friday the 11th April (300).

Paolo Pellegrin

A major exhibition for FotoFreo 2008 will be work by the renown Magnum photojournalist, Paolo Pellegrin. The exhibition will consist of a selection of work from his recently published book, As I was dying. These dramatic black and white images featuring photographs from Lebanon, Haiti, Afghanistan and the funeral of Pope John Paul II, are both an unflinching and memorable record of man’s inhumanity to man and an exploration of our response to death. Paolo’s exhibition will be in the exhibition gallery at the Maritime Museum on Victoria Quay, together with the exhibition, Australian Minescapes, by Edward Burtynsky.

This is a Magnum Photos Touring Exhibition. All images © Paolo Pellegrin/Magnum Photos. The images from this exhibition were printed on the HP Z Printer with Vivera inks. FotoFreo Inc gratefully acknowledges the generous support of this exhibition by Magnum Photos and Hewlett Packard

Informal Lectures & Presentations

During FotoFreo 2006 we held a number of informal lectures during weekdays, in the afternoon at Kulcha. While attendances were a bit erratic, those that went along found them enjoyable, in a relaxed setting and conveniently located. The programme of lectures and presentations planned for FotoFreo 2008 will continue along the same lines but the scale of the activity has taken on a life of its own with at least 3 lectures or presentation on every afternoon of the first week of the festival, from Monday the 7th through until Friday the 11th. The actual form of these presentations will vary and some will be more in the form of an interview. All presentations will be supported by projections and include a questions and answer component.
Speakers will include: Brook Andrew, Roger Ballen, Edward Burtynsky, Lisa Coleman, Denis Darzacq, Rod Giblett, Philip Goldswain, Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, Poli Papapetrou, Richard Renie, Bill Taylor, Juha Tolonen, Les Walkling, and Susan van Wyk.
However, the actual timetable for these lectures has not yet been finalised.

FotoFreo Fringe

Part of the appeal of ‘fringe festivals’ is the opportunity they provide to sample works that are exploratory, alternative and challenging in the way they cross thresholds and move away from the mainstream. The FotoFreo Fringe Festival hosts an eclectic selection of works by established and emerging photographers, a large number of whom are exhibiting in the Port City itself, nestled in cafes and stores amid the venues showing the core exhibitions. Many of them are located in venues on key thoroughfares in Fremantle – South Terrace and High Street . We recommend that while visiting the work of international photographers in the Fremantle core venues, you also pay these FotoFreo Fringe exhibitions a visit and sample the startling and insightful works by homegrown talent.

Sky Etchings 2 by Natalie Blom

Natalie Blom, Amanda Brown and Andrew Kurzek – Sky Etching
We are so often constrained, even overwhelmed, by the day-to-day contingencies of life and living that we very seldom look up to the skies. Perth photographers Natalie Blom, Amanda Brown and Andrew Kurzek show us the beauty of the sky as it is literally ‘etched’ by constructs such as cranes, bridges, poles, buildings and the masts of ships. Their photographs reveal a depth of beauty and story in a space that is often overlooked by our eyes.
Venue: Soho Soho Coffee Bar, 85 High Street, Fremantle
5 April – 4 May, Monday-Friday: 7am-5pm

Green by Brett Dorran

Brett Dorron – Unadorned
Brett Dorron strips the human figure bare to show that we are all equals in the nude, that the attraction to the art nude is more about the removal of meaning than it is about any established semiotics of the nude. Without clothing – the outward signs of class, status, gender and identity – the nude becomes a clean canvas. A nude can be imbued with gender – or not. It can signify race – or not. Denuded and unadorned, in our basic form, we are all equals. No trappings of culture or wealth. No status, occupation, or education. The only thing left is a simplicity, a purity from which both artist and viewer can add meaning, like colour to a canvas, to construct narratives of beauty. Unadorned will be on exhibition at Dorron’s studio – Up on High. Drop in to see his beautiful nudes but also to have a look at what a working photographic studio is like.
Venue: Up on High Photographic Studio and Gallery, 133 High St, Fremantle (upstairs between House and Dymocks)
Sunday 6th – Saturday 12th April, 11am – 4pm daily.

Photographers in Perth - Worn With Pride
This exhibition by the Photographers in Perth, an informal gathering of photographers and enthusiasts brought together via the online community of Flickr, pays tribute to the men and women who have served in the Australian Armed Forces.  Worn with Pride honours their contribution in war and in peace, showcasing photographs that resonate with the spirit of the ANZAC, of mateship, or courage and ofsacrifice.
Venue: Wyola Club, 81 High, Fremantle;
5 April – 4 May, 12pm – 6pm daily

End Note

HeadOn
Originally it was the intention to have a selection of past winning entries from this now quite established and popular annual portrait competition as part of the FotoFreo 2008 exhibition programme. However, we (FotoFreo) were not able to secure a venue in time and so that will have to be something to look forward to in the future. Never the less, photographers should be aware that this years HeadOn competition is calling for entries and we would urge all interested photographers to consider being part of this important event. Entries close on March 28. Visit the HeadOn website for more information.

Spencer Platt
And if you think you have not got enough to do with all that is happening at FotoFreo during the first week of the festival, I have been reminded that Spencer Platt will be in town to attend the Semi-Permanent08 one day conference at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco and a part of Artrage. Spencer Platt is a World Press Photo award winner (2006) and more information about this event and Spencer Platt can be obtained from the Semi-Permanent website.

We are sometimes asked why anyone would bother to come all the way from the northern hemisphere to one of the most remote corners of the world to attend a festival of photography. We would like to think it was because of the quality and content of our exhibition programme and the many interesting people you would encounter. But it does occur that there could be other attractions as suggested by the following two photographs, courtesy Marcus Schubert (Toronto) and a FotoFreo staffer.
