An idea of Europe

curated and presented by Marta Dahó, Curator (Spain)

Western Australian Museum – Maritime, Theatrette
Victoria Quay, Fremantle
Sunday 21 March 8pm
Price: Mates Rate $12 Full Price $15

A slideshow and lecture by Marta Dahó presenting the work of Marianna Bastashevski (Russia), Hermine
Bourgadier
(France), Mohamed Bourouissa (France), Matthias Bruggmann (Switzerland), Dieuwertje Komen
(Netherlands), Kathrin Kur (Germany), Vesselina Nikolaeva (Romania), Lucia Nimcova (Slovakia), Aleix
Plademunt
(Spain), Bas Princen (Netherlands), Leonie Purchas (UK), Vera Schoepe (Spain/Germany),
Clare Strand (UK), Manuel Vazquez (Spain/UK), Herbet Weber (Switzerland), Tobias Zielony (Germany).

Inspired by George Steiner’s definition of an idea of Europe, the aim of this slideshow is to give an overview of contemporary European photography through the work of some of today’s most talented photographers.

Covering a wide range of different subjects and approaches, these photographs offer a revealing insight into how younger generations are using photography today. Their remarkable projects not only contain compelling visions of our society, but also make significant contributions to the debate on the medium of photography itself.

Some of the projects presented here strike up a direct dialogue with European history by exploring its visual culture; others tackle issues linked to increasing globalisation. Despite their different approaches, though, all these projects help us see and think about the world around us more sharply and provide new keys for a better understanding of the ever changing world.

Marta Dahó (Milan, 1969)

Degree in History of Art from the UAB (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona).
At the moment she works as exhibition curator and as a teacher of history of photography at IDEP (Institut Superior del Disseny i Escola de la Imatge) in Barcelona.

Since 1995, Marta Daho has curated many exhibitions and editorial projects for internationally recognised institutions such as Magnum Photos (2001 – 2005), The Art Contemporary Foundation Metrònom in Barcelona (1995 - 2001), or more recently for SCAN, Photography Festival based in Tarragona (Spain) where he was member of the artistic committee (2008 and 2009) and co-curator of Talent Latent’08, a collective exhibition dedicated to young photographers.

Her most recent project is the retrospective of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide presented at Mapfre Foundation in Madrid and at the Fotomuseum Wintertur, now a touring exhibition.
