Submissions for the FotoFreo 2010 Fringe Festival closed on 31st August. We have been delightfully overwhelmed by applications with a significant increase in submissions on 2008, especially from interstate and overseas. Thank you to all the photographers who have submitted such a high level of work – we are looking forward to a HUGE fringe event next year!
Successful applicants will be notified by the 23rd October 2009 or at the time a suitable venue has been found. Confirmed Fringe Exhibitions with venues will be announced at the festival Programme Launch in October.

Mongolia - Surviving the Winter
by Richard Wainwright at the
YMCA HQ Gallery in Leederville
We appreciate the generosity and cooperation of our venue owners and managers, without them there would be no festival. Thank you all for working with us to create what is going to be the biggest and most exciting, Fringe Festival yet.
We are still seeking venues to host our record number of proposed exhibitions. If you have wall space and would like to join the Fringe Festival please contact Seng or Elizabeth at fringe@fotofreo.com.
Special thanks to Seng Mah, Fringe Co Ordinator and Elizabeth McCaig for tirelessly managing the submissions process and helping put photographers and venues together.

Utopia by Samantha Everton at BIFB 09
Set against a picturesque backdrop of buildings from the gold rush era, the Ballarat Foto Biennale launched its latest festival on September 4th. Despite the winter chill the welcome was warm starting with the Portfolio Reviews where photographers had a chance to present their work to curators and photography critics, amongst them FotoFreo Manager Laura Beilby. All the core venues are set within a five minute walk from each other, making it easy to check out the shows. Some highlights included the late evening happening staged by Australian photographer Alex Syndikas and American photographer Lauren E. Simonutti's haunting work "8 rooms, 7 mirrors, 6 clocks, 2 minds & 199 panes of glass". FotoFreo wishes the Biennale all the best in their new home of Ballarat and we hope there will be many more festivals to discover!
Shows run until October 4 - the full programme is available at BIFB 09.
French photographer Willy Ronis died on September 12th 2009 in Paris. A contemporary of Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ronis emerged as one of the leading image-makers of the golden age of photography. He was most well known for his black and white humanist images of post-war Paris. Despite being confined to a wheel chair Ronis charmed crowds as a guest of honour at this year’s Rencontres d’Arles festival of photography in France.
A new gallery and project space will be launched soon within Alda's Bar in Perth. They are seeking proposals from artists from all disciplines for solo or curated shows. Contact Elizabeth Delfs for more information.
The Art Gallery of Western Australia is looking for a photographer to maintain and build the Gallery’s visual archive. Applications close on the 18th of September - see the JobsWA website for more information.
