Mark the date - FotoFreo 2010

Get out your diaries – FotoFreo 2010: The City of Fremantle Festival of Photography will take place from March 20th to April 18th 2010!

The official Festival opening party will be on the evening of Friday the 19th March at the Fremantle Arts Centre. We are finalizing the programme as we speak and will hold a Programme and Media Launch in late October. Stay informed by reading our newsletters as it’s the one place for the latest FotoFreo info.

It is also worth noting that the success of FotoFreo 2008 has resulted in the Festival being recognized as an important cultural event by the City of Fremantle and Eventscorp and who have agreed to provide substantial additional funding for the 2010 event. This new funding will enable the organisers to engage professional staff, support significant Festival programmes and undertake comprehensive national and international marketing of the event.

Enjoy the dispatch,

FotoFreo 2010 Fringe Festival - Call for Submissions

It’s that time of year again! Do you want to be part of FotoFreo? Exhibit at the Fringe Festival!

Over the last few Festivals the FotoFreo Fringe Festival has been steadily growing and has truly come into its own. In 2008 there were a total of 59 exhibitions in 49 separate venues involving 71 photographers, our biggest Fringe Festival yet.

The Fringe exhibitions take place in Perth, Fremantle and other metropolitan venues during FotoFreo. The Fringe Festival showcases the works of emerging and established photographers in a range of venues including galleries, community centres, studios, restaurants, cafes, pubs and retail stores. Venues from the last Fringe Festival included establishments as diverse as The Little Creatures Loft in Fremantle, The Harvest Restaurant in North Fremantle, the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre in Hillarys, Soto Cafe in Highgate and the Kurb Gallery in Northbridge.

Our dedicated Fringe committee has been hard at work vetting new venues and getting ready for what we hope will be an onslaught of applications! If you’re an overseas or interstate photographer we would like to particularly encourage you to apply – the Fringe Committee can assist you with finding a venue.
Keep your eyes peeled for the very eye catching Fringe poster and flyers to hit the streets of Perth and Fremantle very shortly…

Where have the 2008 shows gone to? A quick update

Have you ever wondered what happens when a show gets taken down at the end of FotoFreo? A lot of our international exhibitions don’t head straight homeand instead go on an Australian journey, travelling to other venues in the country.

Two of our partners have been the Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) and the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Following FotoFreo 2008 the Hijacked show, Marian Drew and Denis Darzacq were exhibited at the ACP. Our key exhibition and commissioned work by Edward Burtynsky Australian Minescapes will open at the ACP in July for what is scheduled to be a big show.

In Brisbane, the Powerhouse welcomed both Paolo Pellegrin’s work As I Was Dying and Jodi Bieber’s Las Canas.

The upcoming Ballarat Foto Biennale will be exhibiting two of our 2008 photographers with core shows by Chen Nong and Mindaugas Kavaliauskas.

We hope to keep forging ties with like minded organizations in the rest of Australia to continue touring FotoFreo shows which in many cases are being exhibited in Australia for the first time. Just remember where you saw it first!

Australian Minescapes by Edward Burtynsky

A major new initiative for FotoFreo 2008 was the commissioning of new photography by the internationally renowned Canadian photographer, Edward Burtynsky, who during 2007 came to Western Australia to photograph in the Eastern Goldfields and Pilbara.  The series of commissioned photographs entitled Australian Minescapes and exhibited at the Maritime Museum during FotoFreo 2008 was generously donated by Edward to the Western Australian Museum. This was done on the understanding that the photographs would tour and that there would be a book published.

The Museum has advised that the book is currently being prepared in time for the first showing of the work at the Australian Centre for Photography in July this year. Other touring venues in the eastern states are yet to be announced.
