WORKSHOP 1: 10 Tips for Better Digital Images
Can’t understand your Instruction Manual? Don’t know what all those buttons and knobs actually do? This session will give you tips on how to take beautiful, natural-light photographs without flash, get sharper photos and avoid annoying shutter lag.

The Digital Fine Print Workshop – (There are 2 courses, each of 1½ days)
Scope: This workshop concentrates on printing digital files to the highest level of perfection.
The finest editing techniques, materials, colour management, and printing processes combine to significantly expand the range of the fine print and its creative tradition. The aim is to facilitate the development of a comprehensive and sophisticated digital fine print practice. The workshop is conducted over one and a half days as a series of hands-on studio demonstrations, where participants have the opportunity to work with state of the art inkjet printers, inks and papers. Advanced techniques and processes are illustrated with numerous real-world examples and combined to produce prints of exquisite quality in both colour and B&W. Detailed course notes are provided and participants are encouraged to share and discuss their own print making and digital imaging experiences.

Les Walkling is a Melbourne based artist and educator. His art work is represented in many public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and The National Gallery of Victoria. Previously the head of Media Arts at RMIT University, he is now the Postgraduate Research Fellow and an Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant recipient in the RMIT School of Art. Les also conducts regular digital imaging courses through the Centre for Contemporary Photography and the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. He is a regular contributor to journals such as Artlink and Photofile, works as a digital imaging and colour management consultant, and regularly presents at digital imaging industry conferences, seminars and festivals.

Creating unique images using Polaroid materials
Scope: Learning about the Processes of Polaroid ‘lifts’ and ‘transfers’
Lynette Zeeng, an award winning Polaroid photographer, will demonstrate how to create Polaroid Transfers and Lift Offs through a variety of capturing techniques. She will explain how to achieve the most consistent results and avoid common problems and demonstrate the Daylab copy system for creating small images from either photographs (no larger than 5 x 7) or flat objects. The Polaroid Pinhole and the Holga camera will also be used in conjunction with the above techniques. As this workshop is hands-on, participants are asked to bring a range of slides as well as small objects for creating interesting still life images.
Lynnette Zeeng has a Master of Visual Communication investigating Polaroid technique and is a Creative User Consultant for Polaroid Australia. During her career Lynette has amassed a diverse portfolio of both commercial and fine art photography.
Her main area of commercial work involves food and garden photography as well as compositions for book publishers. Her Polaroid Transfers were used in the award winning “Stephanie’s Seasons” and have appeared in several other publications. Lynette has won several awards for her work including honorable mentions in the 4th and 5th international Polaroid Awards. Her strong appreciation of light and structure make her pieces aesthetically affective, and her images have been published both nationally and internationally. While continuing to create images for both commercial and artistic purposes, Lynette lectures in photography at Swinburne University of Technology and at the Photography Studies College in Melbourne Australia.

Greg Hocking
Painting with Light Studio
Scope: Learning about lighting techniques in a studio situation
When the topic of studio lighting is mentioned we naturally think of studio flash units with hundreds of watt seconds of power ready to be released with a push of a button. In this workshop, Greg Hocking discusses and demonstrates a number of different lighting techniques that can be used in the studio setting for creative effect.
Greg Hocking (Master of Photography and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography, B Sc, Dip Photog,) has been awarded the AIPP Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year in 1997 and 1999 as well as the WA Landscape photographer of the Year for 1996 and 1998. Greg has won the WA AIPP Curators Award on three occasions for his Fine Art Photography. In 2005 Greg was recognized by Hasselblad Sweden as their first-ever Australian Hasselblad Master.
Outside of his landscape work, Greg Hocking runs a commercial photography business servicing Architects and Corporations. Greg has been involved in photography tours to overseas and Australian locations as well having lectured in photography at both TAFE and University.

Photo Fashion
Experience a real fashion shoot with Fashion Photographer Penny Lane and Fashion Designer Pia Bennett. Having professional photographs of your work is an essential part of being a fashion designer, and in this special one off class you will learn the tricks to styling a shoot, working with lighting and composing the right shot for your work. Students are encouraged to bring along their own designs and props, but clothing and props will also be provided by the tutors where necessary.

Photo Photocopy
Scope: A special opportunity to build a series of works for a visual diary, and experiment with the photographic image.
Take a series of digital photos with photographer and Hijacked curator Mark McPherson and print them on a photocopier to create different images and collage effects. Incorporate text and illustration to give your photographic work a new meaning and take part in the photo-photocopy phenomenon!

Pinhole Camera Workshop
Scope: Explore the fascinating world of pinhole photography in this special one off workshop.
Learn about the science behind photography with this incredibly low tech tool – the simple pinhole camera. You tutor will provide you with a camera and then shoot with you on location around the Arts Centre and other parts of Fremantle.

Painting with Light and Night Photography
Scope: Learning to take landscapes at night using torches and other means.
Lighting a set or product on location is often the domain of the film industry armed with a crew of gaffers and a cast of thousands. In this workshop, Greg Hocking demonstrates some simple and fun ways to light an outside location.

Cyanotype from Digital Negatives (two days)
Scope: This workshop blends 21st Century digital technology with the earliest iron silver photographic printing processes developed in the mid 19th Century to produce unique fine-art prints from your favourite images.
Over one evening and the following morning, participants will learn how to prepare their images for output as A4 sized digital contact negative and then produce unique Cyanotype or Van Dyke brown/Argyrotype prints on artist’s papers.
This practical workshop will enable students to: select suitable images from their existing digital or analogue files; prepare and print them as inkjet transparency contact negatives with the correct densities and corrections for the processes being used. Students will also be shown how to select appropriate receptor materials for their prints, prepare and apply the emulsion chemistry and produce final prints from the negatives that they have prepared. An introduction into print post treatment including bleaching, toning and hand colouring will also be given.
Mark England graduating with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Photography) from RMIT in 1979, Mark has worked as a commercial photographer, photographic lab manager and more recently as a lecturer within the photography department at Central TAFE. His current area of expertise is the digital photography field. Of particular influence is the merging of digital imagery with more traditional printing processes. The developing of a commercial and practical digital negative that fully utilizes the potential of fine art printing techniques.
Julian Tennant is a freelance editorial and fine art photographer specialising in travel, editorial and documentary photography. Whenever possible, Julian eschews digital photography, preferring traditional silver emulsion and dark room practices with a particular emphasis on obsolete and alternative printing techniques.
Julian has had numerous exhibitions in Australia and internationally as well as having his work published in several books and magazines. With much of his work is focused on the South East Asian region, he is represented by The Pikture Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand and Code Red gallery in Western Australia.

Requirements: Participants in this workshop are asked to bring a selection of images that can be used to
produce their negative. Images can be on transparency film, prints
(no larger than A4 size) or in digital format (15Mb) and will be used to
output their digital negative to a size of roughly 13x18cm.
It's also recommended that they bring an apron, lab coat or wear old
clothing as stains from the chemistry are impossible to remove.
