Cover of Conversations with the Mob

From UWA Press comes a remarkable photographic record of Western Australia’s Martu people...
Conversations with the Mob
Photographs and words by Megan Lewis

Over six years, Walkley Award-winning photojournalist Megan Lewis lived with the Martu people - one of the last Indigenous groups in Australia’s vast Western Desert to come into contact with Europeans.
Lewis was warmly welcomed by the Martu, who subsequently told her stories of their history and allowed her to create this photographic account of desert living today.
The result is a stunning collection of over 200 photographs and oral stories. Conversations with the Mob captures the beauty, humour, sadness and friendship of a brave and resourceful Aboriginal community juggling the demands of traditional and Western cultures.
Megan Lewis emigrated to Australia from New Zealand in 1993 and began working fulltime for Reuters. She has also worked at The Australian as a general news photographer. Megan’s photographic essay The Martu Mob won a Walkley Award in 2005

Film

Manufactured Landscapes
A film by Jennifer Baichwal (2006, Canada, 90 mins)

Manufactured Landscapes is a feature length documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward Burtynsky. Burtynsky makes large-scale photographs of ‘manufactured landscapes’ – quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. He photographs civilization’s materials and debris, but in a way people describe as “stunning” or “beautiful,” and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without trying to easily answer them.
Shot in Super-16mm film, Manufactured Landscapes extends the narrative streams of Burtynsky’s photographs, allowing us to meditate on our profound impact on the planet and witness both the epicentres of industrial endeavour and the dumping grounds of its waste. What makes the photographs so powerful is his refusal in them to be didactic. We are all implicated here, they tell us: there are no easy answers. The film continues this approach of presenting complexity, without trying to reach simplistic judgements or reductive resolutions. In the process, it tries to shift our consciousness about the world and the way we live in it.

Where: Film and Television Institute, 92 Adelaide Street, Fremantle
When: Monday 7 April, 7:30-9pm and a second showing on Saturday 12th April commencing at 2pm
Cost: $10

This film will be shown on the first occasion immediately after the opening of Chinese photographer Wang Gang’s exhibition Yi in the Wild also at the FTI (commencing at 6pm).
