ROSEBUD
2006 Festival Photographer: Matthew Sleeth

untitled No 2 Rosebud 03 (20kb) photo by Matthew Sleeth"Rosebud is a seaside town on the Mornington peninsula, about an hour southeast of Melbourne. Until I was about 13 my family spent our summers there, in the same caravan site with the same neighbours, every year.

"Unlike many things lost from childhood, this one was possible to re-visit.

"So in the summers of 2003, 2004 and 2005 I went back and took these pictures and found myself quite surprised so little had changed.

"There was still the beach with its gentle waves, the foreshore with its caravan sites and the Rye carnival. Teenagers were still having awkward first kisses, families were returning year after year, recreating their suburban comforts on a miniature scale, albeit with a modern twist - transistor radios had given way to dvd players, station wagons to four wheel drives.

"A sense of community and continuity remained and I remembered these with great affection, but the underlying currents of boredom and slight menace were also familiar." Matthew Sleeth.
