Get the Picture - Buying, selling & collecting
photography
Sunday 26th March
A forum discussion in the Drill Hall at the University of Notre
Dame Australia with key speakers, Sandra Byron, Graham Howe and Sandy Edwards, and
with Professor Mark Haworth-Booth in the chair. The
presentations by these speakers will be supported by image projections.
Topics to be discussed will include:
- Whos hot and whos not, internationally, nationally and local.
- Current market trends here and overseas.
- Where and how you buy photographs.
- The role of the independent gallery.
- The role of the auction houses, art fairs etc.
- What to look for.
- How does Australia compare with elsewhere.
- The value of a collection and who will or can value a collection.
- Where the collections are and the major collectors.
- Archival integrity of a collection.
- Digital prints are they viable for collecting and what is the price differential?
- Terminology
The event, which runs from 2-5pm, will be in two parts:
1st forum session from 2-3pm;
afternoon tea/coffee from 3-3:30pm;
2nd forum session 3:30-4:30 and then
windup drinks from 4:30-5pm.
Venue, Time and Cost
The venue is the Drill Hall, University of Notre Dame Australia, in Mouat Street at the
corner with Leake Street.
The time is Sunday afternoon, March 26th from 2-5pm.
And the cost is $20 per head (including GST) with no discounts.
However, Friends of FotoFreo will have free entry to this
event. Bookings will be essential.
FORUM CHAIRPERSON
Professor Mark Haworth-Booth (UK), author of many
standard works on photo-history and former Senior Curator of Photographs at the Victoria
and Albert Museum (1977-2004).
FORUM PANEL & SPEAKERS
Sandra Byron (Aust), former curator of photography at
the Art Gallery of NSW, art consultant and proprietor of the Byron Gallery.
Sandy Edwards (Aust), photographer and director of
Stills Gallery in Sydney.
Graham Howe (USA), Principal of Curatorial Assistance, a
creative arts organisation that brings cultural exhibitions and art-related services to
clients and audiences worldwide.
Taking the form of a 'hypothetical' the
evening will be co-ordinated by Greg Hocking and consist of a panel disussion supported
where appropriate by visual projections. The panel will consider a range of questions
relevant to the industry today.
A must for all professional photographers and students.
Venue, Time and Cost
The venue is the Theatrette at the WA Maritime Museum on Victoria Quay.
The time is Friday the 31st of March from 7-9pm.

FORUM CHAIRPERSON
Greg Hocking a Master of Photography and Fellow of the Australian
Institute of Professional Photography. Greg was awarded the AIPP Australian Landscape
Photographer of the Year for 1997 and 1999. In 2005 Greg became the first Australian
photographer to be recognized by Hasselblad Sweden as an International Hasselblad Master.
